Hidden federal to state employer name has too many characters

I haven’t had much experience filing my taxes and have a question that my employer can’t seem to answer.

While filing my federal taxes through TurboTax, I encountered an issue where the software has a limit of “Maximum 35 Characters Allowed” for the employer’s name, but my employer’s name is 37 characters long.

After some research, I found this page (https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/2632588-how-do-i-fixhow-do-i-fix-the-error-where-it-says-the-employer-name-is-to-long).

Is it legal to shorten my employer’s name? Will the IRS only check the first four characters of the employer’s name to verify it with the FED ID number? Should I just wait the seven days for Intuit to issue a patch (which I’d prefer not to)?

Any guidance or thoughts on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

In cases where the employer’s name exceeds the character limit in tax software like TurboTax, it’s okay to shorten the name as long as it’s done consistently and doesn’t misrepresent your employer. The IRS primarily verifies employers using the Federal Employer Identification Number (EIN), so as long as the EIN matches, the shortened name shouldn’t be an issue.

You can shorten the employer’s name to fit the character limit in TurboTax. The IRS doesn’t require an exact match of the employer’s name but rather focuses on the Employer Identification Number (EIN) and other details. Provided the EIN and other information are correct, a slightly shortened name should be fine.

It seems that the issue of “hidden federal to state employer name has too many characters” relates to a problem encountered in tax preparation software, particularly when transferring information between federal and state tax forms. This often happens when the employer’s name exceeds the character limit set by the state tax form. To resolve this, I can try abbreviating the employer’s name or using a shorter version that still identifies the employer. If the software allows, I might also look for a setting to adjust how the information is displayed or transferred. Many users have faced similar issues, and forums suggest that contacting customer support for the tax software can provide specific guidance tailored to my situation. It’s important to ensure that all information is accurate and fits within the required limits to avoid any delays in processing my tax return.
