Can you live on a houseboat and avoid taxes?

@Hadley
So basically a loophole for poop disposal…

Even in Arkansas, you can’t just dump waste on the land.

It’s his land though? People have boats on private lakes all the time in Texas.

So he’s already paying some tax then?

Septic, solar, wind… boom, you’re off the grid. Make the dock part of the boat and call it good. Let us know how long that actually works.

Is this a libertarian meme?

Houseboats get taxed as personal property every year.

Are you saying that’s true everywhere or just in Arkansas? OP says Arkansas doesn’t tax boats, so are they wrong?

Nope, Arkansas does tax boats as personal property.

Is that every single year?

Yep.

As long as you don’t use public roads, call the cops or fire department, or send your kids to school, you’re good.

What makes you think you won’t have to pay property taxes?

You still gotta pay taxes on the land, even without a house on it.

Yeah, but it’s way less.

Maybe they’ll hit you with income tax?

What income? How does that even apply?

Just thinking out loud… they gotta pay for this somehow, right?

This sounds like a bad idea.

Too bad people are being negative without knowing the facts. If Arkansas really doesn’t tax boats, this could actually cut down your property taxes. Sure, you’ll still pay for the land, but it’s way less than having a house.

Don’t forget about boat taxes.

Best way to avoid taxes? Live in a box behind a 7-11. Works for lots of people.
