I’ve been researching the child tax credit, and I’m curious about why it stops at age 17. Can anyone here explain the reasoning behind this?

From what I understand, the child tax credit is available for children under 17, but I’d like to understand why it doesn’t extend beyond that age. What factors or policies influence this decision?
