so the us just walked out of the un tax convention process, basically saying they don’t want to be part of it. they called for other countries to leave too, but no one did. the negotiations are supposed to focus on tax havens and international tax rules, but now the us is out. does this hurt the process, or is it just the us doing its own thing again?

wait, so the us was part of this at first, then just bailed? why?
yep, they showed up on day one, stayed quiet all morning, then announced they were out in the afternoon. they didn’t really give a big explanation, just said they objected to the process.
@Franklin
sounds like they just wanted to make a statement and leave. any idea what they didn’t like?
is this part of a bigger trend? feels like the us is stepping away from a lot of global stuff lately.

yeah, the article mentioned they’ve also pulled out of oecd tax talks and some un climate and health processes recently.
@Franklin
so basically they don’t wanna deal with international rules and wanna do things their own way?
what’s this tax convention actually supposed to do?

it’s about international tax cooperation, mostly to crack down on tax havens and make sure big corporations and the wealthy aren’t dodging taxes.
@Franklin
yeah, that’s the weird part. even though they’d benefit from better tax rules, they still walked out.
so does this change anything? or will the talks just keep going without them?

talks will keep going. since decisions are made by majority vote, the us can leave, but they can’t stop the process.
any chance the us comes back later, or is this a done deal?

hard to say. nothing stops them from rejoining later, but right now, they seem pretty committed to staying out.
