Is My Wife Considered a Dependent for Tax Purposes?

Hey guys, I’ve got a question about taxes, would my wife be considered a dependent for tax purposes?

She’s unable to work because of illness and several surgeries, and she’s planning to apply for disability benefits soon. I’m wondering if I can claim her as a dependent on my taxes. Thanks for any insights you can share.

No, you cannot claim her as a dependent. However, you will file jointly as you are married.

Your spouse is NOT eligible to be claimed as a dependent.
However, instead, It is far preferable to file a combined return rather than to claim a dependant. To file jointly, your spouse need not be employed or have any source of income. If your partner makes no money at all, you can still file jointly.

SHDM… You can rely on H&R Block to ruin something so simple and apparent.

Your spouse is not someone you may ever claim as a dependent. Even if you could, in what way would a 3k tax credit be preferable to filing jointly and taking a 12.5k increase in your standard deduction?

No Tracy. However, since you are married, you file a joint married file.
