I recently learned that, as a second-year college student, I may have to pay taxes. I got roughly $14.5k in scholarship returns in my first year. During the second semester, I worked as well, but my total pay was probably only $1–$2,000. Do I need to file my taxes for these? I haven’t completed my 2024 taxes because I didn’t know. I do not know about how taxes are handled.
How did you get the $1,00–$2,000k? Was it with a company where you completed a W-4 form upon hiring, causing social security to be deducted from your income, or was it somewhere like DoorDash or Uber Eats, where the workers are self-employed or independent contractors?
I worked a job on campus to earn the $1–$2,500. I didn’t complete a W4 or anything similar. I was hired, and I started the next week, according to an email I received a few days after the interview. I had about 1% to 2% of my pay cheques withheld from me.
With this work, did you receive any tax paperwork, such as a W2? Since it was campus employment, you might be exempt from Social Security and Medicare, but I’m curious if there was any federal or state withholding.
I also have some inquiries about the scholarship funds, but let’s first discuss the previous points.
I didn’t receive any notification about tax forms, and the website I use to access my salary doesn’t appear to include any tax records of any kind. Due to state taxes, I’ve had about 2% of my earnings withheld during my employment.
