Filed my 2021 taxes late… do I have to mail them or can I e-file somewhere?

I just filed my 2021 taxes online with FreeTaxUSA, but it says I need to mail them. Is there a way I can still e-file on another service, or do I have to mail them no matter what? Also, can I still get my refund since it’s been over three years?

I also need to file for 2022 and 2023. What’s the best way to handle all of this and claim my refunds? Thanks a lot!

Most DIY software doesn’t allow e-filing after the deadline. A tax professional might be able to e-file for you, but mailing your return is free and works fine.

Recently, some people with IP PINs have been able to e-file prior year returns using DIY software, but it doesn’t always work.

The IRS closes the e-file system this weekend, and 2021 won’t be available when it reopens in January. You’ll probably need to mail it.

Yes, it’s possible to e-file elsewhere, but you might have to pay. Mailing it is cheaper. Keep in mind the e-file window is closing soon, so act fast if you want to try that option.

If you’re mailing, don’t forget to sign your return and attach copies of your W-2s to the front page where it shows you.

You probably can’t e-file 2021 at this point. Mail it ASAP using certified mail so you have proof. For 2022 and 2023, you might be able to e-file when the IRS reopens the system in January. If you want to get it done now, print and mail those too.

For paper returns:

  • Use your current address.
  • Sign and date the 1040 in blue ink if possible.
  • Attach your W-2s.

Mail each year’s return separately to the address for your state. Using certified mail is a good idea so you have proof you sent it.

If you missed the e-file deadline, you’ll need to mail the return.

2021 is too old for e-filing. You’ll need to find the right address for your area and mail it. I suggest using certified mail.

How do I pay late penalties when filing late? Also, where do I check how much the penalties might be? Thanks!

If you’re due a refund, there are no late filing penalties. Penalties only apply if you owe taxes.

You’ll have to mail the return since e-filing isn’t allowed for late submissions. Use certified mail for proof.

Penalties work like this:

  • Late Filing: 5% of the unpaid taxes per month (up to 25%).
  • Late Payment: 0.5% of unpaid taxes per month (up to 25%).
  • Interest: Accrues daily on unpaid taxes and penalties.

The IRS will send you a notice with the exact amount if penalties apply.

Actually, the IRS e-file system allows late filings for the current and prior two years. If you want to e-file for 2022 or 2023, you should still be able to do that now.

Do you think I should try e-filing 2022 and 2023? I thought 2021’s window was still open but FreeTaxUSA says it’s not. Should I try a different service?

@Abi
Mailing is fine too, just follow the instructions and send it certified. If you want to e-file, check other software or customer support to confirm if you can still do it. Don’t wait too long if you want a refund!

@Madden
Thanks so much! I’ll look into other options and try to file this week.

No problem! Paper filing works great too if e-filing doesn’t pan out.

@Abi
If you want to e-file for 2022, do it by Friday. The window is closing.

Retail software usually only supports current-year filings unless you have an IP PIN.

@Riley
Thanks for explaining! Should I send all three years together or in separate envelopes? And do I still have time to get my 2021 refund?
